Who first came up with the idea of abortion?

I posted something about this earlier, before the potential Supreme Court decision was leaked to the media.

I used to be a Democrat, and I used to knee-jerkedly be "pro-abortion."

But now that I'm older and thinking about it a little more:
Who first came up with the idea of scraping a baby out of a womb? (Let me guess: Doctors who catered to prostitutes in the olden days.)

If you think about it from a non-political point of view, the very idea of such a thing is absolutely psychotic. How did such a psychotic thought become mainstream?
