When you're young and have no money, your choices of happiness are: grades (if you're in school) and intellectual interests/music/art and hook-ups/potential mates. As you proceed into middle age, it's jobs and stuff you can buy (or, if you're a woman who's never worked, or worked at low-level jobs, you're really into your kids and grandkids---notice that men hardly ever talk about such). I'm really happy with my new rug and coffee table and black chair.
