Pope Francis on Russia/Ukraine Conflict

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — Pope Francis told an Italian newspaper on Tuesday (May 3) that NATO may be partly to blame for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and he said he hopes to visit Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in hopes of brokering a peace.

Talking to reporters from Il Corriere della Sera, Francis said that “NATO barking at Russia’s doors” may have raised alarms in the Kremlin about the Western European alliance’s intentions in Ukraine. “I can’t say if (Russia’s) anger was provoked,” he continued, “but facilitated, maybe yes.”

I have not heard ANYONE express my own opinion about the Ukraine/Russia conflict---except now, by the POPE, of all people! :)

For the past 10 years, leaders of Ukraine have invited NATO and US military and global NGO personnel into their country. OF COURSE Russia would be upset. Given Ukraine's geopolitical location, wouldn't you think that the country's leaders would be more diplomatic, out of necessity? Or was the lure of Western money more enticing? Ukraine was never part of Europe but was always part of Russia.

Zelensky is telegenic, but... he obviously does not have a grasp of the history of the region that he lives in. I think he has been swayed by the vast influx of Western money (and the Internet). Did his lack of understanding lead to the current conflict?
